Nightmare roadworks are causing misery in Alexandria but one local business is determined to spread some positivity – by decorating traffic cones in YARN.
The owners of Susie’s Wool Shop have been bringing brightening up Gilmour Street with ‘yarn bombing’.
The knitting and crocheting craze sees crafters adorn everyday items, including postboxes, bollards, and whatever else comes their way, with colourful cosies.
Mum and daughter team Jennifer and Susie, as well as Susie’s mother Susan Crawford, have been hard at work making woolly wares for traffic cones and a nearby phone box.
Even a road sign has been given a makeover with knitted bunting.
Jennifer said it’s brought some much needed cheer to the town following weeks of roadworks during the renovation of Smollett Fountain, which have caused chaos.
She said: “I don’t know where the origins of yarn bombing came from but it’s to show people that places can be cheered up and made more colourful with knitting and crochet.
“We saw it being done in other areas and decided to do here to spread a bit of positivity.
“People have decorated post boxes with yarn but we don’t have one of those near us so we’ve decorated the phone box instead with a woolly highland cow.
“The traffic cones have been outside the shop for so long they’re like a member of the family.
“All of our family members get jumpers made so we thought we might as well make jumpers for them too!”
Jennifer told how their work has raised plenty of smiles, with passersby popping into the shop to say thanks.
Even workers have stopped by to show their appreciation.
Jennifer added: “We’ve had a fabulous reaction from people walking by and saying thanks very much for putting it there.
“We’ve even had some of the workers come in and say

If you ever questioned it before, let “Bardo” — wordily subtitled ‘or False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths,’ as was the director’s wont with 2014’s “Birdman” — lay your queries to rest: Alejandro Iñárritu really, really loves Fellini. He’s not the only one, naturally: comparisons to “8 ½” are par for the course whenever a filmmaker comes out with a notionally autobiographical work, as with Pedro Almodóvar’s “Pain and Glory” in 2019.
Alexandra Jarvis and Alexandra Rose are looking back at their first season of Selling the OC.
Bardo” be Alejandro González Iñárritu’s third best director Oscar in a row following “Birdman” and “The Revenant” wins? It’s a question many were asking heading into the Venice Film Festival, where the Netflix-backed “Bardo” world premiered in competition. The three-hour-long drama, which wrapped at 12:15 a.m. Venice time, earned a standing ovation of just over four minutes at the Sala Grande. A number of audience members began leaving before the movie ended given the late hour, but the vast majority stayed to applaud the helmer.Iñárritu was visibly moved by the reception to his film, certainly one of his most personal efforts to date, and had tears in his eyes as he embraced his cast and producers.

Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic “Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths” is a movie longer than its title, and maybe even more pretentious. It’s the first film that Alejandro G. Iñárritu (“Birdman,” “The Revenant”) has made in his native Mexico in 22 years, and you feel, in every scene, the sweat and ardor of his ambition. He wants to make an epic statement — about life and death, fiction and reality, history and imagination. He wants to make a confessional autobiographical fantasia about the fears and dreams hidden behind his façade as a famous and celebrated film director. He also wants to complement and compete with his fellow filmmaker and transplanted countryman Alfonso Cuarón, who in 2018 returned to Mexico and drew on his own life to make “Roma,” the world’s artiest Oscar-bait movie, getting it bankrolled by the deep pockets of Netflix. (“Bardo” is, if possible, an even artier Oscar-bait movie, also bankrolled by the deep pockets of Netflix.)
