Eco activists have warned “business as usual” must end as Scotland’s biggest climate camp in a decade gears up for a massive “day of resistance” at Grangemouth.
Campaigners are targeting the INEOS oil refinery - Scotland’s worst private polluter - today with major demonstrations and direct action. Since Wednesday, they’ve set up camp at Kinneil Estate, just outside Bo’ness, near Falkirk, and around a mile from the huge petrochemical site.
Visiting the site yesterday, the Daily Record spoke to frontline activists who warned the planet was on the brink of climate disaster - and also witnessed the steady build-up of police presence around the venue and nearby. Squadrons of cops in vans were seen outside the vital Grangemouth plant - which supplies around two-thirds of petrol to Scots forecourts - with officers in unmarked cars keeping watch by the camp.
They appeared to include cops from the Met in London, suggesting Police Scotland has drafted in help from outside forces to head off disruption. A police source said: "There will be a substantial presence in and around the area because of its strategic importance due to the fuel lines that supply much of the country."
It came as four eco-warriors yesterday used kayaks to sail past patrols and occupy an oil tanker terminal at Hound Point on the Grangemouth site.
They held banners reading “resist and renew”, with one entering the terminal itself holding a sign that said “Ineos: profiting from poverty and pollution”.
One of the kayakers, Dr Mairi Spanswick, said: "If we don’t change business as usual, we will need three Planet Earths to sustain our lives by 2050 - and we’re living on a dying planet.
