Refresh for latest… The elongated 2023-24 awards season wraps tonight as the WGA presents its strike-delayed 2024 Writers Guild Awards in simultaneous ceremonies on both coasts. Deadline is posting the winners live as they are revealed; see the running list below.
Cord Jefferson took the first award of the night, following up his Adapted Screenplay Oscar win for Amazon MGM’s American Fiction.
On the small screen, Beef completed its awards-season sweep with a win for Limited Series. The FX program earlier grabbed trophies from the Emmys, SAG Awards, Golden Globes and Critics Choice.
The WGA Award for New Series went to HBO’s The Last of Us, written by Neil Druckmann, Halley Gross, Craig Mazin and Bo Shim. Writers Nora Zuckerman & Lilla Zuckerman took the Episodic Comedy trophy Peacock’s Poker Face, and Fox’s The Simpsons again won the Animation prize, this time for the episode “Carl Carlson Rides Again,” penned by Loni Steele Sosthand.
It’s been a weird, wild and wacky award season for the Writers Guild of America, with its nearly five-month strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers throwing everything for a loop. The Oscars came and went last month, leaving the WGA as the last entity to present 2023-24 awards.
Reminder that the Academy Awards handed its Original Screenplay to Justine Triet and Arthur Harari for Anatomy of a Fall. That script, however, isn’t eligible for a Writers Guild Award because, unlike other guilds, the WGA deems ineligible any scripts for movies not produced under its Minimum Basic Agreement or a bona fide collective bargaining agreement with various affiliated countries.
