A woman died after being launched into the air when she was struck by a bus that then crushed her after it was shunted from behind, a court has heard. Melissa Burr was fatally injured after being hit by the coach as she tried to cross the road outside Victoria station in London on August 10, 2021.
Olusofa Popoola, 60, allegedly caused the 32-year-old's death by accelerating his electric bus into the back of the parked vehicle, which propelled it forward into Ms Burr. He is accused of causing death by dangerous driving and injuring the other bus driver, Diane Mathuranayagum, reports The Mirror.
Prosecutor Robert Evans told the Old Bailey yesterday that Popoola's vehicle was third in a line of coaches outside the station. When the first bus moved, Ms Mathuranayagum drove her vehicle to the front of the queue, engaged the parking brake, and exited the driver's cab to stand at the open door.
At this time, three pedestrians, with Ms Burr, from Rainham, Kent, the first, attempted to cross the road in front of the queue of buses. Mr Evans told jurors: "The parked bus lurched forward. It hit Ms Burr, who was propelled up and forward. The people behind her jumped backwards out of the way.
"The driver of the parked bus, Ms Mathuranayagum, was thrown out of the door of the parked bus and onto the pavement. The driverless parked bus continued to go forward, it ran over Ms Burr who ended up under the bus and she very sadly died as a consequence of the multiple injuries that she received."
The court was told that Ms Mathuranayagum suffered a fractured eye socket and that a passenger on her bus was thrown to the floor and suffered minor injuries.
