New York’s state senate passed a bill on Tuesday that would restrict the use of song lyrics in court, a common practice disproportionately applied to prosecute rappers. Senate Bill S7527, co-sponsored by state senators Brad Hoylman and Jamaal Bailey and dubbed the Rap Music on Trial bill, would require prosecutors to prove a lyric is “literal, rather than figurative or fictional,” before presenting it to a jury.

Bobby Shmurda has said that New York’s new Rap On Trial bill should be adopted across the United States.Earlier this week (May 17), the New York State Senate passed a bill limiting the use of song lyrics as evidence in court by prosecutors.First touted last November, the purpose of this bill is to set a new high bar compelling prosecutors to show “clear and convincing evidence” that a defendant’s rap song, video, or other “creative expression” is “literal, rather than figurative or fictional”.Shmurda was jailed for seven years in 2014 after being indicted and pleading guilty to weapons and murder conspiracy charges. The initial indictment in his case included references to his lyrics.“I’m grateful for it,” he told TMZ of the new bill.

Wendy Williams wants to meet with Sherri Shepherd following the comedian's recent comments about  host. The request comes after a bit of back and forth between the pair. It all started Friday when Williams spoke with Fat Joe on Instagram Live, who asked Williams whether she'll tune into Shepherd's daytime talk show, , which will premiere this fall after officially comes to an end. Shepherd joined a list of celebrities — including Fat Joe — who guest hosted for Williams on  last fall after she stepped away from the show due to ongoing health issues.The decision to end was made in February, with producers announcing Shepherd's own daytime series -- aptly named  -- taking its place.«I like her, but I won't be watching her because I know what she’s going to be doing and that’s really not my thing,» Williams said.

Wolf Alice have delivered a cover of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard‘s song ‘Sense’, performing their rendition on Australian radio station, triple j.Aired today (May 6), Wolf Alice’s version of the song is sultry and smooth, capturing the laid-back feeling of the original. Driven by silky guitars, stirring keys and singer Ellie Rowsell’s soft vocals, they breathe new life into the 2015 cut, lifted from King Gizz’s ‘Paper Mâché Dream Balloon’ LP.“I think they’re such a prolific band and so talented that they can have these hidden pop gems, in my opinion, that it’s really clever,” said bassist Theo Ellis in a post-performance interview.

Wolf Alice have announced Blue Lullaby, lullaby versions of a collection of songs from the band's 2021 album Blue Weekend. The companion EP featues four songs from the London band's third studio album and will be released on June 24.

Wolf Alice have announced plans to release a new EP featuring lullaby versions of select songs from their ‘Blue Weekend’ album.Titled ‘Blue Lullaby’, the release will feature four reworked tracks from their 2021 album including new versions of ‘No Hard Feelings’, ‘Lipstick On The Glass’, ‘How Can I Make It OK?’ and ‘The Last Man On Earth’, the latter of which you hear below now.“’Blue Lullaby’ came about because we wanted to strip down some of our more emotional songs from ‘Blue Weekend’ and see if they hit any different,” said frontwoman Ellie Rowsell.“We also had a really nice moment during the ‘Blue Weekend’ campaign singing one of our songs with a choir and we wanted to experience that again with a few other songs, especially as there are a lot of harmonies and a lot of vocal layering on ‘Blue Weekend’.“Hearing multiple voices singing together is an unparalleled feeling to me so I’m happy we got to record this experience and I hope people enjoy it.”‘Blue Lullaby’ will be released on June 24 via Dirty Hit. William Earl It goes without saying that Variety’s Power of Women New York event is taking place at an exceptionally difficult and divisive time — and while we are gathering to celebrate the formidable achievements of women in entertainment and the charities they generously support, it also goes without saying that there is still a very long way to go, and the importance of having women in power in entertainment is more vital than ever.On the positive side, there are more women in C-suites and positions of power in the music industry than ever before — as Variety noted earlier this year, even the traditional boys’ club of major-label A&R has seen several female executives made heads of those departments. But as the latest USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative report shows, the music industry has a lot of work to do.
