Wolf Alice announce ‘Blue Weekend’ lullaby EP and share new take on ‘The Last Man On Earth’

BBC Radio 3 has announced the musicians that will join the next phase of its New Generation Artists programme, who will work with the broadcaster from September this year through to December 2024, initially crossing over with the last team of musicians participating in the scheme.The programme, in the words of the BBC itself, “supports young musicians at the beginning of their international careers with performance opportunities in London and around the UK”.That includes solo shows as well as performances with the BBC orchestras and appearances at festivals including the BBC Proms, Cheltenham Festival and Edinburgh International Festival, with broadcasts of those performances on Radio 3 and other radio stations around Europe bringing participating musicians to a wider audience.The new team taking part in the programme includes three UK musicians – accordionist Ryan Corbett, jazz pianist Fergus McCreadie and countertenor Hugh Cutting – plus, from beyond the UK, Colombian cellist Santiago Cañón-Valencia, Berlin-based Leonkoro Quartet, New Zealand-born violinist Geneva Lewis and South African soprano Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha.Says Radio 3 Controller Alan Davey: “It is a privilege for Radio 3 to be providing performance and broadcast opportunities to young artists as they embark on their international careers. This year, we are particularly proud that the New Generation Artists joining the scheme showcase a variety of instruments and voices and come from many corners of the world”.“This means that our audiences can experience and discover a variety of music by encountering these inspiring young performers”, he adds.

Special Interest have released a video for their new single, ‘(Herman’s) House’. Watch the clip below.The single marks the New Orleans punk band’s first release on Rough Trade, and focuses on the story of Herman Wallace, a Black revolutionary who was held in solitary confinement while imprisoned in Louisiana.The band’s vocalist, Ali Logout and guitarist Maria Elena said the song was inspired by the ability to continue to dream in darkness.“Despite the sadistic torture they endured, they continued their fight towards Black liberation behind the prison walls,” they said.

The network today revealed premiere dates for eight new or returning series including the debut of Jeff Bridges-led drama The Old Man, new Hulu comedy The Bear and Ryan Reynolds docuseries Welcome to Wrexham, along with fresh seasons of What We Do in the Shadows, Reservation Dogs and American Horror Stories.

Wolf Alice have launched a new series of mini-documentaries to accompany their upcoming ‘Blue Lullaby’ EP – check out the first instalment below.The North London band released a “lullaby version” of their 2021 single ‘The Last Man On Earth’ last week. It’s one of four ‘Blue Weekend’ tracks to have been given a stripped-back reimagining for the aforementioned four-track collection, which arrives on June 24 via Dirty Hit (pre-save here).Today (May 10) Wolf Alice posted the first episode of the Stroma Cairns-directed Making Blue Lullaby.

Pale Waves have announced details of their third studio album, ‘Unwanted’, with the follow-up to 2021’s ‘Who Am I?’ due to be released on August 12 via Dirty Hit.To coincide with the announcement, the band have shared the album’s first single ‘Lies’, which was previously teased last month.The group shared two previews on their official TikTok account, with the song’s chorus (“You called it love but it never had a feeling/ Ripped out my heart and left it bleeding“) playing over the videos.The track was recorded in Los Angeles with producer Zakk Cervini, who has worked with the likes of Blink-182, Halsey and Machine Gun Kelly. Arcade Fire have shared a new video for ‘Unconditional I (Lookout Kid)’, filled with the tube men that have appeared at their recent live shows – watch it below.The track, shared last month, is the second single from the band’s sixth album, ‘WE’, which came out last week (May 6).The video centres around a host of inflatable tube men, which have also danced around while the band played the song at a number of recent shows at Coachella, in New York and at London’s KOKO.Speaking to NME for last week’s Big Read cover feature, frontman Win Butler was reminded of a scene from the Coachella set, when one of the tube men didn’t inflate properly and needed a kick in order to begin dancing with his friends.“I think when we were making these songs, we weren’t sure what world we were making it for,” he responded.“There’s so many precarious things in the world and so much to have anxiety about, but I’ve been trying to really appreciate these moments when I’m in them. Wolf Alice have delivered a cover of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard‘s song ‘Sense’, performing their rendition on Australian radio station, triple j.Aired today (May 6), Wolf Alice’s version of the song is sultry and smooth, capturing the laid-back feeling of the original. Driven by silky guitars, stirring keys and singer Ellie Rowsell’s soft vocals, they breathe new life into the 2015 cut, lifted from King Gizz’s ‘Paper Mâché Dream Balloon’ LP.“I think they’re such a prolific band and so talented that they can have these hidden pop gems, in my opinion, that it’s really clever,” said bassist Theo Ellis in a post-performance interview.

Wolf Alice have announced Blue Lullaby, lullaby versions of a collection of songs from the band's 2021 album Blue Weekend. The companion EP featues four songs from the London band's third studio album and will be released on June 24.
