Saturday Night Takeaway has been cancelled after 20 seasons, as presenters Ant and Dec return for the final season on ITV from Saturday, 24 February. Why have the dynamic duo decided to step away from their hugely-popular entertainment series? Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly have been owning Saturday nights for years now, with hilarious sketches and segments leaving the audience cheering away every week. But last year, the presenting legends announced that after season 20, they would be taking an indefinite hiatus from the show.
As fans were gutted to hear the news, the duo explained that their final series would air in 2024. They also revealed that the reason for their break was due to all the extensive planning required for their epic interactive programmes. “We love making Saturday Night Takeaway, but reaching the milestone of 20 series seemed like the perfect time to pause for a little while," Ant shared at the time.
The pair already have a steep workload with a number of other popular programmes, not least of which are I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! and Britain's Got Talent. I'm A Celebrity alone involves both Ant and Dec living abroad in Australia for a month in the lead-up to Christmas.
And BGT sends the hosts trekking around the country for various auditions.
The pair also helm their popular game show Limitless Win now too, which launched in 2022. Ant and Dec announced they were "taking a break" from Saturday Night Takeaway in the hope that they could "catch our breath" for a while. While the pair chose not to cancel the series outright, they also didn't share a possible return date.
