Sir Alex Ferguson's post-match hospitality became the stuff of legend during his 27 years in charge at Manchester United.
The fiery Scot would spend 90 minutes at war with opposition managers, but generally once the final whistle had gone, he would shake his rival's hand and welcome them into his office for a glass of red wine and a chat.
Even after the most gut-wrenching of Champions League exits in April 2010, he would invite Bayern Munich manager Louis van Gaal through for a drink. The Bundesliga giants had just progressed on away goals after a chaotic evening which ended in a 3-2 win for United on the night, but a 4-4 aggregate draw.
The Scot managed to hold his nerve during the post-match drink, although assistant coach Rene Meulensteen wasn't so composed.
Meulensteen recalls in his new book: “It was a bitter feeling, and I wasn’t impressed by Louis van Gaal, the Bayern manager, in the gaffer’s office afterwards. I was pouring the wine as they both took a seat.
“‘Do you know why we won the game?’ Van Gaal asked Sir Alex. ‘It’s because I gave a better team talk.’
“I might have deliberately been a little energetic with my pouring of his wine – missing the glass and getting it over his trousers and shoes.
“‘Sorry about that,’ I said, with much less polite words running through my head. I normally enjoyed spending time with rival managers after a game – that was one occasion I was quite happy to leave quickly.”
