Convicted killer Charles Sobhraj has spent almost half of his life in prison. The French national was accused of committing a trail of robberies and scams in his 20s, which led to him being imprisoned in Afghanistan.
Following a shocking jailbreak, Sobhraj's crimes escalated, and he was later convicted and imprisoned for two killings. Back in 1977, the now 79-year-old man allegedly confessed to 10 more murders - but later reportedly withdrew his confession.
However, Sobhraj admitted to drugging and theft in more than 100 cases. If the story sounds familiar, it might be that you watched the BBC1 drama about his life, The Serpent, in 2021 - which is still available to view on Netflix.

So who is Charles Sobhraj and why is he the topic of Channel 4 series The Real Serpent: Investigating a Serial Killer?
Born in Vietnam in 1944, Sobhraj was able to claim French citizenship as Saigon - now Ho Chi Minh City - was a colony at the time. Moving between France and Southeast Asia, he began to commit petty crimes.
Sobhraj was jailed in Paris for burglary in 1963. Upon release, he met Chantal Compagnon, a Parisian woman he proposed to before courts sentenced him to eight months in prison for driving a stolen vehicle.
The pair married when he was a free man. Together, and soon with a baby daughter, the pair moved through Eastern Europe to India.
Sobhraj ran a car theft and smuggling operation and was arrested in 1973 for an armed robbery in New Dehli, but he borrowed bail money and skipped the country. The couple moved to Kabul in Afghanistan and
