Spring is a magical time in Scotland when the landscape comes alive with new life.
After months of bitter cold and grey, springtime sees the country's vistas painted with colour. From snowdrops to daffodils, everywhere you turn there are vibrant flowers dotting the countryside.
As Scots will know, spectacular scenery is never far away — no matter where you live in the country. To prove this point, just 20 miles out of Glasgow, there is a lovely small island that bursts into a riot of colour after the winter months.
The Scottish coastal 'hidden gem' village home to 'lovely' seafood and palm trees
This little hidden gem is called Inchcailloch, and now is the perfect time to check it out. As reported by the Scottish Daily Express, it is one of more than 30 scenic islands sprinkled around Loch Lomond.
Inchcailloch covers just 0.19 square miles, and is within walking distance of the charming village of Balmaha on the east coast of Loch Lomond. Despite being even smaller than neighbouring islands such as Inchlonaig and Inchmurrin, it is amongst the most popular on the loch — welcoming around 20,000 visitors every year.
As expected, the most popular time of the year to visit Inchcailloch is spring. Those who journey to the island will be dazzled by the stunning carpet of bluebells that awakens around this time.
Elsewhere, Inchcailloch boasts a rich ecosystem filled with gorgeous flora and fauna. Like its neighbouring isles, it is home to an abundance of oak trees that provide ideal conditions for "distinctive communities of mosses, lichens and birds" to thrive, according to VisitScotland.
