Everyone has a favourite local Chinese takeaway. But not all are created equal. Some streak ahead from the pack, and while a solid sweet and sour can come out of dozens of great kitchens across Greater Manchester, it’s about the little touches.
In a bid to find the best spot for a takeaway chow mein, crispy duck, dumplings and fried rice, we’ve pitted the three best-rated places in the region against each other. With some parameters set on reviews site TripAdvisor - by region, by score, by price (we went for mid-range) - the search has been narrowed down.
The Rice Bowl on Cross Street is a bit of an institution, and always appears in the top echelons of the city’s highest-rated takeaways, thanks to a very impressive 4.5 out of five score from nearly 2000 customer reviews. Well over half of these rate it as 'excellent'.

Then there’s Rainbow 88 in Cheadle, another 4.5 score, which has been run by the same family for nearly 25 years. One regular has called it the ‘best Chinese in Manchester’, noting it’s ‘amazing food and great staff’.
Finally, there is the Maple Tree in Marple Bridge, which manages a mighty five stars from over 800 reviews. In fact, it’s hard to find a bad word about them, with praise heaped on by regulars and new customers alike.
So, with some control parameters also in place - an order of dumplings, crispy duck, chicken chow mein, a fried rice dish, a curry sauce and a house special per takeaway - we set about trying to find Greater Manchester’s best Chinese takeaway.
