We finally got a diverse Academy Awards – but will it be enough to save the Oscars?

Oscars producer Steven Soderbergh is opening up about the controversial decision to switch up the show order of this year’s ceremony. In a new interview with theLos Angeles Times, Soderbergh revealed that he and his fellow producers were trying to do something different given the unusual nature of this year's awards season.«We thought it might be fun to mix it up, especially if people didn’t know that was coming,” Soderbergh said.

When you’re still talking about the Oscars weeks after the ceremony, typically it’s not because we’re shocked about winners and snubs. No, when the discussion keeps going it’s because of some sort of flub or misstep by the show that caused a bit of controversy.

When Mia Neal, Jamika Wilson and Sergio Lopez-Rivera won the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling for their work on Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Neal and Wilson became the first Black women to win the honor. When Neal took the stage at Union Station to accept the award she used this opportunity to give shine to other Black, Asian, Latinx, Indigenous, queer, trans and everyone in the margins and said of her monumental win: “One day it won’t be unusual or groundbreaking, it’ll just be normal.”

The 93rd Academy Awards have managed to celebrate the best of talent and cinema despite facing a rough year as the movie business too was hit hard by the pandemic. Following all COVID-19 protocols with testing and social distancing on the venue, Oscars 2021 managed to honour the contributions of the entertainment industry in a beautiful ceremony.
