He said: “People in custody are either getting brought to court late or we can’t get them brought up into the custody cells. All this does is leave people who are vulnerable – in custody or witnesses – waiting hours wondering what is going to happen.
“Last week we had a young man on remand. We couldn’t bring him up to the court as they had no staff. We had a trial and jury in Perth where the accused was in prison. He was meant to be at court for 10am but he didn’t even get into the building until 2.37pm.
“When you have sheriffs, lawyers, jurors and witnesses waiting around for hours on end, everybody loses.”
Other lawyers have vented their frustration online. One claimed a client, 17, escorted by GEOAmey, arrived five hours after her trial was due to start.
The Scottish Solicitors Bar Association’s Gordon Addison said: “The lack of investment at the sharp end of criminal justice in defence lawyers, social work custody workers and police is coming home to roost.”
Stuart Munro, convener of the Law Society’s Criminal Law Committee said: “The frustration for solicitors caught up in this is driven by the distress they’re seeing daily for people caught up in the justice system and the damage it’s causing.”
