Vanessa Feltz has opened up about 'medical misogyny' after doctors told her mum she was 'attention seeking' while trying to get a diagnosis.
The TalkTV presenter claimed that a specialist asked her mum if she was 'looking for attention' before she was ultimately diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. Vanessa's mum died in 1995 at the age of 57 after she was diagnosed with endometrial cancer, but it was spotted too late by doctors and meant she couldn't have treatment.
Vanessa spoke about the 'medical misogyny' her mother faced when she sought help, saying she was 'neither heard nor listened to'. Speaking on her show on TalkTV, she said: "It’s very difficult, this one because I think I should just say what happened with my own mother."
"My mother was suddenly getting the most tremendous abdominal pain but only sporadically and only sometimes and very unpredictably," she said.
"It was incredibly painful when it happened and she went from doctor to doctor to doctor, specialist to specialist and they all pretty much did that pat her on the head thing saying, you know, 'Are you neurotic? Are you looking for attention? Is it the menopause?' And it turned out to be endometrial cancer and she died at the age of 57."
Vanessa alleged that doctors continuously misdiagnosed her mum, meaning that when they found the cancer it had spread to multiple places in her body. Vanessa said: "She died of it. It had spread so far that they couldn't really do anything much about it and she definitely was neither heard nor listened to, she really, really wasn’t."
