An unannounced inspection found “extremely dirty” window mesh in some wards at Dumfries’ Midpark Hospital – despite a contract in place for cleaning.
An action plan has been developed by NHS Dumfries and Galloway in response.
Part of a programme of inspections with a focus on infection, prevention and control in NHS in-patient adult mental health units across Scotland, the July 25 visit also found a lack of liquid hand wash or soap for patients in some wards.
Furthermore, there was a limited availability of accessible alcohol-based hand rub and most staff did not carry a personal supply.
The issues were raised with senior managers at the time and an action plan was implemented immediately afterwards to address the areas identified for improvement.
The newly-published report by Healthcare Improvement Scotland, said: “We expect NHS Dumfries and Galloway to address the requirements and recommendations.”
The inspection found three areas of good practice and one requirement – to sort out the dirty window mesh, which allows ventilation whilst restricting external access on the wards.
In response, NHS Dumfries and Galloway said that the security window configuration at Midpark on Bankend Road means the windows cannot be thoroughly cleaned.
However, it said: “We have been in discussions with Polar – the company who manufacture these specialist window units – to identify a solution, since this issue was highlighted.
“Polar have advised that the design of these windows has since evolved to enable new units of this nature to be cleaned thoroughly – these new units have a hinged mechanism which allows for thorough cleaning to take place.
