A community has been left devastated once again after two girls from same school tragically died in water-related incidents in less than a year.
Abbie Walton got into difficulty in the River Etherow near Hodge Lane in Broadbottom, Tameside on Wednesday night (June 14). Emergency services attended, but despite the best efforts of paramedics, the 15-year-old was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
Heartbroken friends and family have since paid tribute to the Copley Academy pupil, who has been described as the 'kindest soul', Manchester Evening News reports.
In a message shared to social media this afternoon, the Staybridge school said: "Copley Academy have been made aware of the tragic news that one of our students lost their life last night. We offer our deepest sympathy to all of those involved in this tragedy.
"Our hearts and thoughts go out to the families, loved ones, friends and local communities affected at this extremely sad time. Copley would like to offer our support and also the support of a specialist team."
Abbie's death comes less than a year after another student at the school, Lucy Smith, drowned after trying to save a friend who got into difficulty. The teen was with a group of pals at Carrbrook Angling ponds - located just six miles from where Abbie died - on August 15 last year when the 'tragic accident' occurred.
During an inquest at Stockport Coroners' Court, Detective Inspector Steven Horton from GMP said that it had been a particularly hot day. To cool off, the group decided to go for a dip in the pond, but things 'very suddenly' took a turn for the worst.
