Tom Kerridge has opened up about how he was forced to make changes to his relationship with alcohol after fearing that he wouldn’t make it to his 50th birthday, which he celebrated back in July. The TV chef, who is known for appearing on shows including Saturday Kitchen and More Sunday Lunch, may own a series of pubs ut he has revealed that drinking culture is something that he can’t “be a part of”. During an appearance on Dr Alex George’s Stompcast, the chef revealed that he’d drunk 75 years worth of alcohol by the time he’d turned 40 - something which sparked him to change his ways.
“It was massively a part of my life, and still is - I own pubs, I sell it and I’m passionate about people who make it. Except it’s not something that I know I can be a part of,” he said. “The way I view it is that if you live to 75 years old, you’ve got that amount of booze that you can drink until you’re 75 - I did it all by the age of 40.” As a result, Tom cut out alcohol completely after believing that if he carried on as normal he wouldn’t “make 50”.
Meanwhile, speaking on Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs in 2018, Tom opened up about how one drinking session shortly before his milestone 40th birthday caused him to change his ways. “I went cold turkey. One day that was it.
I have completely destroyed alcohol for myself,” he said. In addition to going tee-total, Tom says that he was able to drop 12 stone over five years by cutting down on how many carbs he was consuming. He also adopted a ‘dopamine diet’, which centres around foods such as dairy, eggs and fruit and veg that are thought to boost dopamine levels.
