Lily Gladstone Makes Oscars History as First Native American Best Actress Nominee for ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’

On Saturday night, when Martin Scorsese collected a gold medallion—the honor given by the DGA to all five of its Feature Film nominees—he thanked his cast and crew and Apple for their support in making Killers of the Flower Moon, but he emphasized his thanks to the Osage Nation for their intrinsic role in the making of the film and its success.

When the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian hosted Apple Original Films’ Killers of the Flower Moon for an event on Friday, director Martin Scorsese and star Lily Gladstone talked extensively about the development and production of the Oscar-nominated epic.

Twenty years before landing an Oscar nomination for Killers of the Flower Moon, Lily Gladstone was visualizing winning an Academy Award.

The nominations for the 96th Oscars revealed Tuesday included a diverse mix of Best Picture contenders, from box office blockbusters and festival favorites to sweeping streamer epics and indie darlings.

Oscar winners John Williams and Martin Scorsese continue to prove that age is just a number with 2024 nominations.

Lily Gladstone made history as the first Native American nominated for best actress, for her towering role as Mollie Burkhart in the crime thriller “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Colman Domingo became the first Afro Latino nominated in best actor for his powerhouse performance in the civil rights drama “Rustin.” He’s joined by fellow Black nominee Jeffrey Wright for “American Fiction.” This is only the second time in Oscar history where more than one Black actor, who wasn’t either Will Smith or Denzel Washington, was nominated for the leading prize.

For the first time in history, three of the 10 movies nominated for best picture — Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall,” Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” and Celine Song’s “Past Lives” — were directed by a female auteur, the most recognized in the Academy Awards’ 96-year history. The other best picture nominees are: “American Fiction,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” “Oppehneimer,” “The Holdovers,” “Poor Things,” and “The Zone of Interest.” Before this year’s best picture nominees, 591 movies were nominated by the Academy.

While Barbie received the most nods any film had ever received in the history of the Critics Choice Awards with a whopping 18 nominations, it was Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer that cleaned up on the night. The 29th Critics Choice Awards took place in California on Sunday (January 14), with Oppenheimer stealing the show taking home eight gongs.

Murphy was expected to take home Best Actor, but lost out to Paul Giamatti, who won Best Actor for his turn in The Holdovers in one of the biggest upsets of the evening.

DiCaprio would play the incorruptible Texas Ranger-turned FBI agent Tom White, whose sleuthing ends the Reign Of Terror murders that decimated the murders of oil rich Osage tribe members in Oklahoma in the 1920s. Until DiCaprio, Scorsese and De Niro decided it didn’t nearly capture the complicity of law enforcement and the white community that were so indifferent to the plight of the Osage, whose leaders basically bribed J Edgar Hoover’s new division to get involved. It perpetuated the “white savior” narrative that has been a staple of Hollywood westerns forever, and did little to capture the Osage side of the story. Here, he explains why this epiphany that set back the project years and led him to switch from hero to villain, was so worth it and resulted in a movie many have called a masterpiece with staying power.

Patti Smith has made her first public appearance since her hospitalisation to honour Lily Gladstone.Last December, the punk singer was forced to cancel a show in Bologna after a “sudden illness” prompted Smith to be rushed to the hospital. A few days later, it was reported that the singer was “in good health“, with Smith taking to social media: “I am resting, as the doctor ordered, grateful to have had such care, though being painfully aware that many are not so fortunate.”Nearly a month later, Smith has made her first public appearance to present Gladstone with the award for Best Actress at the National Board of Review Awards Gala.

The African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) reveals its list of 2024 Special Achievement Honorees which includes Killers of the Flower Moon, Jamie Foxx and Datari Turner at Foxxhill productions, Fatima Robinson, head choreographer on The Color Purple 2024, and others were chosen for their contributions to the entertainment industry. These honorees will be celebrated at the organization’s 7th Annual AAFCA Special Achievement Awards luncheon, taking place on Sunday, March 3rd in the Centennial Room at the Los Angeles Athletic Club in downtown Los Angeles.

Finally, she auditioned for the third sister, Anna, who is the most independent and the most troubled, her mother’s favorite but also a hard-drinking partier. “She was almost larger than life in that character, with a bravery and an unpredictable quality,” says Rene Haynes, who was the film’s Indigenous casting director.
