Professor Tim Spector has urged people include four items into their daily diet which are said to be the "best for your gut health".
Posing the question "which fermented foods are best for your gut health?" on Instagram, the professor, from King's College London, said people looking to prioritise their gut health - or just generally improving their health - should include a small portion of fermented foods daily.
This is because it can help towards increasing the diversity of your gut microbiome and in turn, improve your overall health. Talking about the 4 Ks, he said that this includes Kefir, Kimchi, Kraut and Kombucha which he says are "best for your gut health."
The author of Food for Life: Your Guide to the New Science of Eating Well - a Sunday Times bestseller - said people can experiment with the foods and add them into their diets any way that they like. He explained: "When it comes to the number of bacteria species there doesn’t seem to be much difference between them so my advice is this: enjoy the ones you like!
"Like most things in gut health, mixing things up always helps and the more different types of fermented foods you like, the more uses you can find for them, whether it’s adding sauerkraut to your sandwiches, making salad dressings with kefir or using wherever you’d add a spicy condiment."
If you find kimchi too spicy, try making it yourself with less chilli flakes or go for a sauerkraut instead, he suggests. For people worried about the salt content in sauerkraut, you can opt for kefir, and if you don’t have dairy, try a water kefir or a kombucha.
