The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is urging people to help any older family members or friends check if they could be eligible for Pension Credit. The benefit provides people over State Pension age on a low income with an average of £3,900 each year to help with daily living costs and can also act as a gateway to access help with housing costs, fuel bills and Council Tax.
New claims for Pension Credit made before midnight on March 5 (today), which later turn out to be successful will also qualify for a backdated payment of the final round of cost of living support from the DWP, worth £299. In a new post on X (formerly Twitter), the DWP prompts people to ‘help a family member or friend to check eligibility and see how much they could get’ through Pension Credit.
Nearly 1.4m pensioners, including 127,000 living in Scotland are in receipt of the income-related benefit, however, the latest figures from the DWP suggests around 880,000 eligible pensioners are missing out on the benefit - despite being entitled to it.
The benefit currently tops up income to a minimum of £201.05 per week for single pensioners and £306.85 for couples - more if a person has a disability or caring responsibilities. From April, the payments will increase to £218.15 per week for single pensioners and £332.95 for couples.
Older people, or friends and family, can quickly check their eligibility and get an estimate of what they may receive by using the online Pension Credit calculator on GOV.UK here.
Alternatively, pensioners can contact the Pension Credit helpline directly to make a claim on 0800 99 1234 - lines are open 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.
