But the crown jewel of his five-year dynasty at the Amsterdam Arena refused to follow suit. For much of last summer, United were embroiled in a transfer wrangle for Barcelona sensation Frenkie de Jong.
Will he come? Won’t he? The desperation for a midfielder was telling as Red Devils supporters became more and more invested in the saga. However, rumours linking De Jong to the club preceded Ten Hag’s appointment as United boss, with interest circulating as early as 2018.

Five years ago, De Jong - under Ten Hag’s tutelage - was reportedly targeted by United scouts during a 2-1 Nations League defeat to France. Derek Langley is believed to be the man who recommended the midfielder to Ed Woodward but his pleas landed on deaf ears.
Fast forward to the Covid-19 pandemic and the Red Devils, again, were linked with the Dutchman. Barcelona were facing well-documented financial struggles and a fire sale was on the cards at the Camp Nou.
