An expert has revealed the lesser-known garden fence law that could land you with a whopping £20,000 fine.
Fences are often at the heart of noisy neighbour arguments but not understanding the rules around them can end in some pricey fines, reports the Express. Sean Bunyan from Eurocell has revealed how easily you could be caught out by planning restrictions or disputes with neighbours when it comes to your garden fence.
The expert claimed that failing to install the fence at the correct height is actually a big no-no. It is important when putting up a fence that you consider the legal limit for height - which is two metres.
It is possible to put up fencing higher than this limit, but you’ll need to acquire for planning permission beforehand.
There are some conditions to this rule - including if your fence fronts a path, road or public pavement. In this case, if your fence is over a metre high, then you'll also need planning permission.
You’ll also need planning permission if you live in a conservation area or historically listed building. Sean said: "Failure to gain planning permission can trigger a sequence of events that could lead to a £20,000 fine or more.
"It’s important for people to do their research before they commit to starting any work. That way, people can avoid being hit by a hefty fine, or having a visit from the planning officer."
Fence ownership is also something that homeowners are not often aware of either. The experts at Beaton’s Building Supplies have shared the "best way" to tell who owns which fence.
They said: "It’s a common belief that the fence to the right is the one you are responsible for. However, this is merely a myth."
