Scientists say a routine medical procedure could increase the risk of a patient later experincing severe arthritis.
According to a new study, having tonsils removed as a child could result in the inflammatory condition appearing later in life. The findings, published in the journal RMD Open, looks into the theory that childhood infections have a developmental role in the condition.
Ultimately, genetic predisposition is the leading cause of the disease, however, scientists are now looking at early life factors that could play a role. Swedish researchers looked at health and family information among the national Swedish population registries to compare exposure to various early life risk factors in adults with and without the condition.
