Greek authorities have confirmed that 19 bodies have been uncovered in the northeastern area following a major wildfire.
Police activated the country's Disaster Victim Indefication Team in order to identify the bodies which were discovered near a shack in the Avanta area of Alexandroupolis, according to fire department spokesman Ioannis Artopios. Because no reports of missing people were filed in that area, authorities are inquiring the possibility that the casualties were migrants who entered the country from the nearby border with Turkey.
It comes after authorities issued an extreme wildfire warning for parts of Greece following evacuation efforts on Tuesday (August 22). Members of the public have been banned from accessing mountains and forests across the region after two people died in northern and central Greece on Monday.

"Given that there have been no reports of disappearances or missing residents from the surrounding areas, the possibility that these are people who entered the country illegally is being investigated," the fire brigade said.
Alexandroupolis has particularly faced the brunt of the wildfires with a school, several homes, and a cemetery being damaged in two villages across the region while around 200 firefighters continue to tackle the blaze. In 2018, Greece saw its deadliest wildfire when 104 deaths were recorded at a seaside resort near Athens after residents were not ordered to evacuate.

Nick Vivarelli International Correspondent Roman Polanski’s Italian producer Luca Barbareschi got emotional at the press conference for “The Palace,” a black comedy that is the director’s new work and premieres at the Venice Film Festival today. “It’s been very difficult to make this film,” said Barbareschi, a multi-hyphenate who also stars in “The Palace.” “Polanski is not easy [to finance]” he added, noting that “there is a hole – France – in the middle of this film,” since French companies refused to participate in its production. Author Douglas Coupland once wrote in his seminal 1991 slacker work, “Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture,” that “nostalgia is a deadly weapon,” and one supposes those words can be cautionary tales about our youth, what we romanticize and what potentially holds us back from growing because we can’t move on past it. I’m not exactly sure what that has to do with the new documentary, “‘The Elephant 6 Recording Co.,” about the late ‘90s recording collective The Elephant 6, mostly comprised of lo-fi indie bands from in and around Athens, Georgie, other than to say after watching this appropriately chaotic, shaggy and baggy documentary, Coupland’s quote immediately flashed back into my memory.
