Zack Sharf Digital News Director The highlight of Brendan Fraser’s Oscars night was winning the Academy Award for best actor thanks to his acclaimed performance in Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale,” but perhaps in second place was a long overdue reunion with megastar Dwayne Johnson. The two actors starred together nearly 22 years ago in “The Mummy Returns,” the sequel to Fraser’s 1999 blockbuster “The Mummy” that marked Johnson’s film acting debut in Hollywood. “Very cool full circle moment here with my long time buddy Brendan Fraser and his sons,” Johnson wrote on Instagram along with a video of the two actors reuniting backstage at the 2023 Oscars. “My very first film of my Hollywood career was ‘The Mummy Returns,’ which Brendan was the star. Lots of critics and cynics betting against me at that time, but Brendan welcomed me with open arms and was very supportive. I never forget kind people.”

It’s been over 20 years since Ridley Scott rocked the period action film genre with his beloved “Gladiator,” eventually earning Best Picture and Best Actor wins at the Academy Awards in 2001. A long-gestating sequel is finally going in front of cameras this summer, with recent Oscar-nominee Paul Mescal (“Aftersun“) taking the lead role and Scott returning to the director’s chair.

Angelique Jackson Academy Award-nominee Barry Keoghan is circling his next high-profile role, with the actor in negotiations to join Ridley Scott’s untitled “Gladiator” sequel. If the deal closes, Keoghan would join fellow 2023 Academy Award nominee Paul Mescal, who is set to star in the Paramount Pictures film. Keoghan is in negotiations to play Emperor Geta. Paramount Pictures has dated the film for November 22, 2024. Scott returns to direct the film, which follows 2000’s “Gladiator,” which was nominated for 12 Academy Awards, winning five including best picture. David Scarpa is penning the script. Scott will also produce with Michael Pruss via Scott Free and Doug Wick & Lucy Fisher via Red Wagon Entertainment. Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are executive producing. Also returning from the original film are cinematographer John Mathieson, production designer Arthur Max and costume designer Janty Yates.

Lady Gaga took her time at the 2023 Oscars red carpet on Sunday, stopping to share a kiss with star Brendan Gleeson, before heading in for her scheduled ceremony performance. Gaga made a last-minute decision to sing «Hold My Hand,» her Oscar-nominated single from the  soundtrack at Sunday's ceremony. The singer initially announced she could not perform because of an overbooked schedule, but announced the morning of the show that she would attend after all. Lady Gaga graced the red carpet in a stunning black gown with a sheer bodice and dropped waist. While posing with Gleeson, the two shared a kiss in front of the photographers.  In addition to Gaga, the four other Best Song nominees are taking the stage throughout the evening, with Diane Warren teaming up with Sofia Carson on «Applause» from ; Rihanna singing «Lift Me Up» from ; Indian singers Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava performing «Naatu Naatu» from ; and «This Is a Life» from  being performed by David Byrne, Son Lux and Best Supporting Actress nominee Stephanie Hsu. The 2023 Academy Awards hosted by Jimmy Kimmel airs live on Sunday, March 12 starting at 8 p.m.
