If you’ve not heard of Barry Keoghan, then we have two questions for you. One, why? And two, why? The 30 year old actor from Dublin, Ireland has been making moves over the last few years, and it doesn’t look as if he’s planning on stopping anytime soon. Especially not now he’s an Oscar nominee for his role in The Banshees of Inisherin.
At such a young age, he’s already appeared in a number of major films and TV series. From Dunkirk to The Killing of a Sacred Deer to his BAFTA Best Actor in a Supporting Role nomination for Calm with Horses, for Barry, it hasn’t always been all glamour and Hollywood. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. The Love/Hate star grew up in Summerhill, Dublin alongside his brother, Eric.
The siblings had a pretty turbulent childhood, and spent seven years living between 13 different foster homes. His mother struggled with drug addiction, and when he was just 12 years old, she sadly died of a heroin overdose. Following this, the brothers were taken into care and then raised by their aunt and grandmother.
Barry has been pretty open about his hard past, and has spoken out about hoping to inspire other young people to follow their dreams. He even admitted that he didn’t expect his life to pan out this way, especially when you’ve got “13 foster homes” written on your CV. But after answering an advertisement he spotted in a local shop for Between the Canals in 2011, he was offered a small role and began his ascent to success.
