Using the example of Liverpool and their recent purchase of Luis Diaz, the South African coach sent a warning to United and urged his former side to emulate the transfer policy of their fierce rivals.
“As much as we don’t want to say it, Liverpool: every time they sign a player, you are thinking, ‘Wow, they look like they have done their homework’," Fortune told The Athletic.
"Take Luis Diaz. I had been watching him for the last few months and years, thinking, ‘Oh my goodness, this is the player United need to sign’. Then Liverpool sign him and you are just thinking, ‘Nooo! How are we missing these players? Come on! Help me out here!’.
“Now we should have more alignment in the club’s structure, also using Ralf Rangnick’s experience in scouting and recruitment. If he can help us find the best young players, we should keep him and let him help us to be successful.
“It is about understanding people who fit Manchester United and the team. It can’t just be a big name who everyone wants and we pay crazy money. He needs to fit the culture and values of the team and the club. I
