Sundance Reveals Winners of 2024 Film Festival (Updating Live)

Matt Donnelly Senior Film Writer The 2024 Sundance Film Festival Awards are underway in Park City, Utah, where a new crop of indies will do battle across multiple categories, including the coveted U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize.
Park City’s Ray Theater was packed Friday morning as dramatic jurors Lena Waithe, Debra Granik and Adrian Tomine circulated with cinephiles and industry types. While Sundance juries can be unpredictable, early favorites out of Utah included June Squibb’s “Thelma” and Jesse Eisenberg’s nimble, emotional road movie “A Real Pain.” A-list director Wes Anderson beamed in via Zoom to present awards in the shorts category, as he himself is in the running for an Oscar for his short “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.” Other notable prizes include the top films in the shorts category, the NEXT category, or emerging and innovating filmmakers, U.S.
Documentary and world cinema and doc categories. Incoming Sundance Film Festival director Eugene Hernandez began the ceremony but leading the audience in a single deep breath, and highlighted his team’s exhaustive efforts to program this milestone 40th anniversary edition.
“To the filmmakers here, you shared your films with us this week. Some of you may leave with a trophy, but you were all chosen from tens of thousands of submissions.
Your worked moved us,” Hernandez said.
