With just weeks left to go until the return of Strictly Come Dancing for its 21st season, the first celebrity revealed to be competing in the 2023 series was announced on Friday as Amanda Abbington. Announcing the news on BBC’s The One Show, a delighted Alex Jones revealed that Amanda would be taking part in the show, as she said: “I’m really excited and incredibly nervous!” Amanda is well known for her role as John Watson’s wife in the BBC series Sherlock, with the popular star having been keen to participate in the show for a number of years before finally getting the chance to compete in hopes of securing the coveted glitter ball trophy.

Early Life Born in North London back on February 28th 1974, Amanda Jane Smith was an only child who despite starting her life in the English capital, was primarily raised in leafy Hertfordshire.
Discovering her love of acting at a young age, Amanda was a natural born performer who would go on to become one of the most in-demand stars of the 00’s, with numerous appearances on both stage and screen. Her first role however came in 1993 when she bagged a guest role in ITV police procedural The Bill.
Interestingly, she would also go on to play a different guest role in a feature length edition of the show, entitled The Bill: Target in 1996. Career After starting her career on The Bill, slowly but surely Amanda continued to add credits to her growing CV, with frequent film and television roles making sure she was never out of work.
