Noah Schnapp has taken to TikTok to address controversy around his thoughts on the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
While the Stranger Things star didn’t say exactly what he was responding to, he said his “thoughts and beliefs have been so far misconstrued from anything even close” to what he believes during a 107-second video posted yesterday. (See it in full below).
Schnapp had posted a now-deleted video soon after the October 7 attacks that called out followers who appeared to support Hamas’ violent actions in Israel and said he was “afraid… as a Jewish American.” A month later he was seen in another video that appeared to show him smiling and laughing at friends holding up stickers with slogans such as ‘Zionism is Sexy.’
The latter video had prompted some people to call for a boycott of the much-anticipated Season 5 of Netflix sci-fi drama Stranger Things.
In the new video, Schnapp cut a conciliatory figure. He said he hoped for the return of the hostages taken on October 7 who still remain in Gaza and for “an end to the loss of innocent life in Palestine,” adding that he wanted “to one day to see those two groups live harmoniously together in that region.”
“I only want peace and safety and security for all innocent people affected by this conflict,” said Schnapp elsewhere during the video. “I’ve had many open discussions with friends of Palestinian backgrounds. Those are very important conversations to be had and I’ve learned a lot. We all hope for the same things… Anyone with any ounce of humanity would hope for an end to the hostilities on both sides.”
He also said he wanted people online to show more “understanding and compassion.”
