The Weeknd’s ‘The Idol’ Soundtrack Sizzles More With the Picture Turned Off: Album Review

A.D. Amorosi “The Idol” has been the TV season’s spite-watch de rigueur – a mess of untenably dated misogyny, homophobia, angry interpersonal sexual violence and traumatic hair styles, all of it was justified in the service of reminding the world: Never trust a dude with a rat tail. However, for all of the menacingly off-putting storylines, visceral physical assaults and mawkish dialogue that made up “The Idol,” the show’s icily epic music — made by its creators and actors, in and out of character — has been mesmerizing… thrillingly so, even, through the program’s bad, brief run. The music was initially broken down as a series of EPs released between June 9-30, and now those weekly teasers are captured in full on “The Idol (Music from the HBO Original Series),” a soundtrack that stands as a far more rewarding and cohesive document than its televised counterpart.

The Chemical Brothers share single ‘Live Again’ and announce new book ‘Paused In Cosmic Reflection’

The Chemical Brothers have released a new single ‘Live Again’, and shared details of their first book Paused In Cosmic Reflection.Announced earlier today (June 28), the single is described as the “perfect Chemical Brothers track”, and harnesses the same signature elements the group captured in fan favourites including ‘Hey Boy Hey Girl’ and ‘Galvanise’.“‘Live Again’ begins simply with a descending, filtered riff and a pair of contrasting vocal lines – one razor spliced to pieces and reconstructed, the other an angel’s sigh,” reads the press description of the single. “And then it all kicks off.

When Album Cover Art Mattered: ‘Squaring the Circle’ Has Anton Corbijn and Hipgnosis’ Founder Recalling Rock’s Greatest Surrealist Sleeves

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic In the history of album cover art, only two parties have become arguably almost as famous as some of the bands they shot or designed for: Hipgnosis, in the 1970s, and Anton Corbijn, from the mid-‘80s forward. Those two forces come together with a new documentary, “Squaring the Circle (The Story of Hipgnosis),” directed by Corbijn, about the era of artwork that entranced him, like most music fans, as a youth. Forty years after Hipgnosis ceased to be a going concern as we knew it, the company’s covers for Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and countless others continue to be collected in coffee-table books. And when it comes to the stories behind the sleeves, rock fans still just can’t get enough… to quote a band that Corbijn came to be associated with a little bit later.

Why Beyoncé hated naked diamond top on ‘Dangerously in Love’ album cover

Dangerously in Love” solidified her spot as an R&B icon and the Queen Bey of the music industry. The 41-year-old’s record cover was photographed by Markus Klinko and featured the flawless singer rocking a diamond-covered top and jeans as she posed in front of an icy blue background. However, the “Crazy in Love” songstress initially hated the web-like shirt that was draped over her bare skin, according to Klinko, who noted that the inspiration behind the record’s jacket photo came from a snapshot he captured of model Laetitia Casta, titled “The Web.”That 2000 photo showed the French model lying on a spider web that was crafted from jewels, with Casta sporting a silver, thread-like minidress that wrapped around her body.“She said she really loved that image and if we could do something like that, just smaller, on her. And I didn’t really know how to interpret that,” Klinko recently told Insider of Beyoncé’s interest.

Amaarae Writes Her Own Rules on the Sultry ‘Fountain Baby’: Album Review

Thania Garcia The very first line of Amaarae’s “Fountain Baby” clearly tells its listeners the best possible setting for the record to be heard: “In the club,” with her breathy intonations pummeling against a wall of war drums. It doesn’t let up from there: For the rest of this Ghanaian-American singer’s sophomore album, similar affirmations ring about female sexuality and shattered gender norms, continuing the themes from her 2020 debut, “The Angel You Don’t Know,” which introduced her to many fans via her first Billboard chart entry, via Kali Uchi’s remix of the album’s “Sad Girlz Luv Money.” The album is all over the map, with a colorful sonic palette of R&B, Afropop, guitar pop and even Japanese folk. In “Sex, Violence, Suicide,” echoing, acoustic strings and Amaarae’s pitched-up vocals sing a lullaby about infatuation, but the kind that’s “Too much / Baby, you’re no good.” Like her debut, “Fountain Baby” also includes a tribute to punk ritualism that serves as the “part two” of “Sex, Violence, Suicide.” Silence for a few seconds, followed by a sigh, and then Amaarae sings: “Don’t care ‘bout what I’m asking you / Just fucking tell me yes! / Tell me I’m the one, tell me I’m the best,” with an instrumental assist from English pop rock band Dream Wife.

Led Zeppelin and Paul McCartney’s post-Beatles band Wings. The new documentary “Squaring the Circle (The Story of Hipgnosis)” — which opened at NYC’s Film Forum on Wednesday and rolls out nationwide later this month — goes inside the studio that created the visuals for some of the biggest acts of the 1970s. “The importance of an album sleeve will never be the same as in the ’70s, and to make a documentary about the most prominent album covers of the era that are all done by one design team is really important for people who have missed that period,” said renowned rock photographer Anton Corbijn, who directed the film.
