Watch The Anchoress pay homage to Depeche Mode on new cover of ‘Enjoy The Silence’

The Anchoress, aka Catherine Anne Davies, has paid homage to Depeche Mode in her stripped-back new cover of ‘Enjoy The Silence’ – watch the video on NME first below. The cover is the latest from Davies’ new album, ‘Versions’, released today (October 6) – a project that has seen her re-imagine ten songs by artists including Manic Street Preachers, The Cure, Nirvana, Nico and Halsey. The latest cover is accompanied by a video directed by JJ Eringa and is a scene-by-scene recreation of the original video released by Depeche Mode in 1990 and created by Anton Corbijn.Speaking to NME about the new song and video, Davies said: “The concept behind the album was for me to flex my production and arrangement skills and revisit classic songs to challenge the listener to think about them in a new way, so when JJ suggested to me that we attempted a loving frame by frame recreation of the original video for Depeche Mode’s ‘Enjoy The Silence’ it seemed like the perfect fit for the intentions of the project.“The original video had a much more impressive travel budget than we had but with the ingenuity of director JJ Eringa…we were able to pretty much approximate every shot from Anton Corbijn’s original video. Half was shot on a DIY green screen in my manager’s living room while the other half was shot guerilla style around the local countryside.

Depeche Mode kicked off the 2024 leg of their ‘Memento Mori’ tour at The O2 in London last night (Monday January 22). Check out photos, footage and the setlist below.Last night marked the first gig of the band’s lengthy run of arena shows in the UK, Ireland and Europe, touring in support of their 15th and most recent album ‘Memento Mori’ and marking their first date in the capital since their acclaimed show at London’s Twickenham Stadium last summer.Following a support slot from Nadine Shah, the band took to the stage to ‘Memento Mori’s atmospheric opener ‘My Cosmos Is Mine’ with an ambitious stage production repeating the light show and Anton Corbijn visuals from the stadium run.Frontman Dave Gahan, while animated in his dancing and showing off his white leather footwear during ‘Walking In My Shoes’, was sparing in his on-stage banter – aside from thanking London for their reception and paying tribute to the “angelic” vocals of bandmate Martin Gore who took the lead for a short acoustic segment.

When Album Cover Art Mattered: ‘Squaring the Circle’ Has Anton Corbijn and Hipgnosis’ Founder Recalling Rock’s Greatest Surrealist Sleeves

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic In the history of album cover art, only two parties have become arguably almost as famous as some of the bands they shot or designed for: Hipgnosis, in the 1970s, and Anton Corbijn, from the mid-‘80s forward. Those two forces come together with a new documentary, “Squaring the Circle (The Story of Hipgnosis),” directed by Corbijn, about the era of artwork that entranced him, like most music fans, as a youth. Forty years after Hipgnosis ceased to be a going concern as we knew it, the company’s covers for Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and countless others continue to be collected in coffee-table books. And when it comes to the stories behind the sleeves, rock fans still just can’t get enough… to quote a band that Corbijn came to be associated with a little bit later.

CAA Signs ‘Tár’ Star Nina Hoss (EXCLUSIVE)

Angelique Jackson Award-winning German actor Nina Hoss has signed with CAA for representation. Hoss stars opposite Cate Blanchett in Todd Field’s “Tár,” which will open theatrically on Oct. 7 via Focus Features. The film debuted to rave reviews at the Venice and Telluride film festivals, with Variety Senior Awards Editor Clayton Davis suggesting that Hoss could land her first Oscar nomination for her supporting performance as wife to Blanchett’s trailblazing composer, who becomes the first woman to conduct a major German orchestra. In his awards analysis, Davis described Hoss as the “heart and soul of the film.” Best known for her acclaimed performances in Christian Petzold’s films “Phoenix” and “Barbara,” as well as Anton Corbijn’s “A Most Wanted Man,” Hoss made her debut in 1996 with “A Girl Called Rosemary.” Additional credits include “Yella” and Petzold’s “Something to Remind Me” and “Wolfsburg.”

‘Squaring the Circle: The Story of Hipgnosis’ Review: How Pink Floyd’s and Led Zep’s Album Covers Became a Rich Palette for ’70s Surrealism

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic When it comes to coffee-table books that survey the great album covers of the classic rock era, there are generally two kinds: those that include a lot of the work of the 1970s design team called Hipgnosis, and those that consist entirely of Hipgnosis’ work. Virtually any rock superstar who had the cachet to ask his record company to blow hundreds of thousands of dollars on a Hipgnosis cover went for the splurge of commissioning an original piece of art that might join classic LP jackets from Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin in a renaissance of 12’x12′ photographic surrealism. Only Hipgnosis could shoot a photo of a cow against a blue sky, put it on a Floyd cover (“Atom Heart Mother”), and make it look like an act of mysterious profundity on a level with the greatest works of Magritte.
