Wet Leg tease next album will be “longer, bigger, better, faster, stronger and more fluorescent”

Wet Leg have teased what their next album might sound like, as well as discussing what it was like to be covered by Harry Styles and Pearl Jam. Watch our video interview with the band above. The Domino-signed indie duo were speaking to NME on the red carpet at the Mercury Prize 2022 last night (October 19), where they joked about the progress of the follow-up to their acclaimed self-titled debut album.“Completed it, mate! Just kidding!” said Hester Chambers, adding that the new album will take in “a bit of this and a bit of that, probably”.Revealing that they’ll be spending much of the next year writing the next record, singer Rhian Teasdale said that fans should expect it to be “like the last one, but longer, bigger, better, faster, stronger and more fluorescent.”The pair also spoke about the “surreal” experience of having one of their songs covered by Harry Styles, and how being covered by Pearl Jam was “very strange and funny and cool”.“It’s just strange when people know that you exist, who you wouldn’t have thought would know you exist,” Teasdale said.

Grammy Spotlight: Rock and Alternative Artists to Watch, from Wet Leg to My Chemical Romance

Jessica Shalvoy Over the past few Grammy ceremonies, the Recording Academy has seemingly warmed up to the idea of alternative and rock seeping back into the mainstream again. With Glass Animals, Arlo Parks and Japanese Breakfast all getting nominations for best new artist last year, it opens the door for acts other than the usual rock ‘n’ roll Grammy mainstays like Foo Fighters, AC/DC, Paul McCartney and Kings of Leon to really shine. On top of the alternative album award, which has existed since the early ’90s, they’ve even added a new category, best alternative music performance. This is a track and single category that will eliminate the need to push songs that are generally classified as alternative into either the rock or pop categories, as happened a few years ago when Beck’s “Colors” was thrown in with Post Malone, Camila Cabello, Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga for best pop solo performance at the 2019 Grammy Awards.

CT attorney general announces special counsel for abortion rights

Connecticut's Democratic state attorney general announced plans Tuesday to appoint a new special counsel for reproductive rights, someone he said would be part of a "firewall" to protect the state's abortion rights laws. Attorney General William Tong said the special counsel, part of his office's new civil rights division, will represent the state's interests in "any court" by taking a leadership role in multi-state amicus briefs filed in abortion cases and be the first to legally challenge efforts to pass a national abortion ban.Tong said he expects there will eventually be more staff for the yet-to-be hired special counsel.

With Support From Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, Tinashe and More, HeadCount Registers Nearly 150,000 Voters as Midterms Heat Up

Jem Aswad Senior Music Editor Of all the issues currently threatening U.S. democracy, attacks on the voting system may be the most severe. Yet as the 2020 election showed, despite those threats, the system can still work — and the best thing people can do is, in order, vote, and get involved. Leading the charge for the music industry for the past 18 years is HeadCount, the not-for-profit, non-partisan organization that you’ve probably seen at any number of concerts, registering voters at a table in the venue’s lobby or merch areas at festivals including Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza and many more. With support from Harry Styles, Ariana Grande, Beyoncé, Billie Eilish, Lizzo, Panic! At The Disco, David Byrne, Anderson .Paak, Tinashe (pictured above), Bonnie Raitt, Dave Matthews Band, Dead & Company, Paramore and many more, the organization has registered more than 145,000 voters already this year — the most it has seen to date for a midterm election (the previous peak was 89,000), and has led hundreds of thousands of others to check their registration status. (Head here for information on the organization and volunteering.)

Karyn Kusama Channels Horror Background With Chilling Abortion Rights Ad for Planned Parenthood

Katie Reul editor As the countdown to the 2022 midterm elections reaches the six-week mark, Planned Parenthood Votes and Planned Parenthood Action Fund are rallying voters to cast their ballots in favor of abortion rights with the debut of a 60-second commercial spot called “Your Voice.” Directed by Karyn Kusama, known for her work in the horror genre on features like “Jennifer’s Body” and “The Invitation,” the video capitalizes on the fears of modern reality — like absence of bodily autonomy and political brainwashing — in a post-Roe v. Wade society. The spot is Kusama’s first-ever commercial gig. “I never really believed in the mission of, honestly, selling products,” Kusama tells Variety. “But this was more about a fundamental idea. This was about bringing an idea, a state of mind, a snapshot of reality to average viewers — regular viewers — across a very broad spectrum of people and across a broad spectrum of beliefs.”
