The SNP candidate in a key general election battleground seat has mysteriously been replaced at the last minute.
Iain Whyte will no longer stand for the Nationalists in Lothian East and his campaign Twitter account is no longer available.
Whyte was unveiled in October as the SNP candidate in the newly-renamed East Lothian, which is a top target for Labour and their candidate Douglas Alexander.
But he has now been replaced as the Westminster candidate by East Lothian councillor Lyn Jardine.
Her Twitter account confirmed the switch.
When the Record clicked on Whyte’s campaign account, it stated: “This account doesn’t exist.”
An SNP source said he had stepped back for health reasons.
One local resident said: “It’s a complete mystery locally why the SNP have changed candidates and to do it this late on is really odd."
He lives in Prestonpans and is a former SNP council candidate.
Jardine said: "I am very excited to be confirmed as the SNP’s candidate for Lothian East and look forward to building on the work that Iain Whyte was leading. Iain continues to be an extremely valued member of Team SNP in East Lothian and has been for a decade or more.
"While I am still adjusting to the fact I'm now the candidate, I can’t wait to bring my own energy and commitment to our local communities to the campaign for Westminster.
“This is an opportunity to build on my reputation as a local public servant and demonstrate how I will put the people of East Lothian first as their SNP MP at Westminster.”
