Health chiefs are growing increasingly concerned over the rising cases of a dog disease that can cause reproductive failure in the animals.
Brucella canis (B.canis) has seen a shocking surge in infection cases this year and has even spread to a small number of humans. Prior to 2020, only three cases in dogs were recorded, however this year has seen 97 confirmed cases which have been mainly focused on animals in parts of eastern Europe.
Infection in humans, while incredibly rare, has only come from clear contact with already infected dogs. Health bosses have said a 'small number' of people in the UK have been infected with the disease but said the risk was very low.
Wendi Shepherd, head of emerging Infections and zoonoses at UKHSA, said: "We have seen a small number of cases of Brucella canis in people in the UK this year. However, the risk to the general public in the UK is very low and the risk to people who have had close contact with an infected dog is low.
"From the small number of cases of the infection that have been reported in humans worldwide, the infection is usually mild, but people who have weakened immune systems, are pregnant, or are young children may be more likely to experience more serious infection."

In the case of Wendy Hayes, a Brit who caught the infection from a pregnant rescue dog from Belarus, she was easily treated with antibiotics but had to put all of her dogs down.
