‘One Life’ Review: Anthony Hopkins and Johnny Flynn Spotlight the Selfless Deeds of ‘the British Schindler’

Alissa Simon Film Critic A classically crafted feature debut from veteran TV director James Hawes (“Black Mirror”), “One Life” intercuts two eras 50 years apart in the long life of humble British humanitarian Sir Nicholas Winton (1909-2015), referred to by some as “the British Schindler.” The biopic serves as a testament to the power of good, with a prestige cast including a fine, understated Anthony Hopkins as the reflective, older Winton, still haunted by the tragic end to his plan to save European child refugees, and Johnny Flynn as his energetic younger self, who embodies the belief that that if something is not impossible, then there must be a way to do it. Although the film as a whole struggles to match the poignancy of its finale, a re-creation of a famous 1988 clip from the British TV program “That’s Life!,” it nevertheless serves as an urgent reminder of the importance of individual action at a time when the world refugee crisis is at a scale not seen since the Second World War.

Stormzy and Maya Jama’s love story - from unknown youngsters to power couple

They say time is a healer, and after rapper Stormzy and Love Island host Maya Jama were seen looking joyously happy and loved-up out and about on holiday in southern Greece, we’re convinced it must be true. Stormzy and Maya split back in 2019 after four years together, but last week the co-ordinated couple, both wearing white, were spotted walking hand-in-hand around Hydra island with eyes only for each other. He was reportedly encouraged to win her back by the other significant lady in his life, his mum Abigail Owuo, and it seems Stormzy, 30, has been giving Maya, 29, the relationship equivalent of the red-carpet treatment.

‘Priscilla’ Review: Sofia Coppola’s Piercingly Authentic Inside Drama About the Troubled Love Story of Priscilla and Elvis Presley

Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic The last time Sofia Coppola made a movie about a teenage royal living in a rococo palace that turned out to be a lavish prison, it was 2006, and the movie, “Marie Antoinette,” was a stylized dream of history — the story of the young queen as naïve and isolated rock star. Coppola’s new movie dramatizes the relationship between Priscilla and Elvis Presley, and the parallels with the earlier film are there if you want to see them.
