A Scots mum has issued a warning after she was scammed for £18 by an online account advertising eggs for sale.
Elisa, who wishes to be known by her first name only, attempted to buy 90 eggs from a woman claiming to own a local business. The 46-year-old, from Balerno near Edinburgh, owns bakery La Torta in Calderwood.
She saw an ad pop up on a local Facebook group from a profile claiming to be in the West Lothian area. Elisa is a supporter of local produce, so she was happy to purchase the eggs as they were advertised at a good price with free delivery.
However, after sending the money, she was told by the crook communicating with her that the transaction was pending on PayPal - even sending a screenshot of the information. The profile then asked her to send the money again but to another account.
After a quick search using keywords on Facebook, similar to the ones used in the post, Elisa saw it had been copied and pasted on multiple groups up and down the UK, including groups in Bath, Swansea, and Kent. This is when the professional cake designer realised she had been scammed.
Speaking to Edinburgh Live, Elisa said: "The first thing that attracted me to buy them was because they said they were local. It is always good to support other businesses close by and I saw it in one of the West Lothian groups. I just thought for almost £20, who is trying to scam people for that amount of money?
