Putin's Russia is "willing to sacrifice millions of lives" to realise its "crazy ideas", President Volodomyr Zelensky has claimed during an impassioned address to the people of Romania.
In a video address to t he Romanian Parliament, Mr Zelensky recalled the horrors of the Ceaușescu regime and showed a "brutal" video from the city of Bucha. Mr Zelensky he said "we know about more than 300 civilians tortured, executed or otherwise killed" in the city near to Kyiv.
He added: "The name of our city of Bucha is now forever in world history. In the history of war crimes. In the history of the extermination of people."
Invoking memories of the Ceaușescu regime, Mr Zelensky said that "Romanian people revolted and defended themselves", like Ukrainians were now doing against Russia. Drawing a comparison to the Russian "occupiers" in Ukraine, Mr Zelensky said the Ceaușescu regime "relied only on intimidation, repression, brutality and deception".
He said: "There was nothing bright in it. The Romanian people revolted and defended themselves, saved themselves. Having overthrown inadequate power. Because that was the only way. Ceaușescu, his wife, his entourage, his 'Securitate' could not be convinced of anything.
"It is also impossible to convince those who promote war in Russia now. Who give criminal orders. Who develop plans for the genocide of the Ukrainian people and the destruction of the Ukrainian state. These people are inadequate. They have lost all connection with reality and are willing to sacrifice millions of lives to realize their crazy ideas."
