The pre-taped speech came amid Russia’s continued invasion of the country.
According to Variety, he shot the video within the last 48 hours in a bunker in Kyiv. He introduced John Legend’s performance during the show.
“The war. What’s more opposite to music?” he asked.
“Our musicians wear body armor instead of tuxedos. They sing to the wounded. In hospitals. Even to those who can’t hear them. But the music will break through anyway…anyway, we defend our freedom. To live. To love. To sound,” he continued.
“On our land, we are fighting Russia which brings horrible silence with its bombs. The dead silence…fill the silence with your music. Fill it today, to tell our story.”
“We joined forces with @GlblCtzn to #StandUpForUkraine. Please join us and donate,” the Academy tweeted following his appearance. For more information, head to ForUkraine.com.
