Over the weekend, it emerged that Labour's candidate in the Rochdale by-election made 'deeply offensive' comments about Israel at a meeting last year. Azhar Ali apologised 'unreservedly' for the comments, and the party stood by him - until last night (February 12).
The Labour Party withdrew its support for Mr Ali in the by-election after 'new information' came to light. This morning (February 13), the Mail Online published an audio recording of the comments made at what is said to have been a Lancashire Labour Party meeting.
Conflicting reports about the nature of the meeting have emerged, but one Labour source has said it was for local party members only. The Manchester Evening News understands the meeting was held in Hyndburn to discuss the concerns about the war in Gaza.

Several sources have said that the meeting took place days after Middlesbrough MP Andy McDonald was suspended from the party following a speech he made at a pro-Palestine rally on October 28. In the recording, Mr Ali criticised the party's decision to suspend Mr McDonald, who he describes as 'solid pro-Palestinian supporter', before blaming 'people in the media from certain Jewish quarters.'
He said: "He shouldn't have been suspended, right? He was suspended on what was said. I know him really well. And he's a solid pro-Palestinian supporter. The media - and some of the people in the media from certain Jewish quarters - were giving crap about what he said."
Mr Ali is also heard telling the audience that he helped stop Israeli flags being raised on public buildings in Lancashire following the attack in autumn of last year. He said: "When the war started, that weekend, Rishi Sunak, he
