The Prime Minister has been accused of ‘stoking a culture war’ after making ‘sickening’ comments about transgender people in his speech to the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester.
On the final day of the conference, Mr Sunak delivered a closing speech in which he axed the northern leg of HS2, set out a plan to phase out smoking and announced sweeping education reforms.
On the subject of transgender rights, he said: “It shouldn’t be controversial for parents to know what their children are being taught in school about relationships, patients should know when hospitals are talking about men or women.
“And we shouldn’t get bullied into believing that people can be any sex they want to be. They can’t, a man is a man and a woman is a woman. That’s just common sense.”
His comments have ignited fury among the trans community in Manchester.
Chris Northwood, Manchester's first trans councillor, who represents the Ancoats and Beswick ward, has accused the Prime Minister of stoking up a culture war.
She said: "With the NHS in freefall, the ongoing cost of living crisis and people worried about affording energy bills again this winter, you'd hope the leader of this country had better things to do than stoke up a culture war against trans people like myself.”
Meg Birchall, who became Oldham’s first trans councillor back in May, said they were “sickened” by the Prime Minister’s comments.
The 21-year-old, who identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, said: “I was sickened but not surprised.
