The incident happened when Ferdinand took exception to a double substitution by his manager, with United 1-0 up at the Allianz Arena against Bayern Munich.

In an attacking move, despite being a goal up and away from home, Michael Carrick and Ji-sung Park were taken off and replaced by Antonio Valencia and Dimitar Berbatov. It would ultimately prove to be a disastrous switch for United, with Franck Ribery drawing Bayern level seven minutes later before Ivica Olic scored a winner in the 92nd minute.
United won the second leg at Old Trafford 3-2 meaning the Germans would go through on away goals. In the aftermath of that first-leg defeat, Ferdinand sought out Sir Alex as the teams walked off the pitch and made his feelings very clear - much to the fury of his manager.
