Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand has opened up about his impressive journey of trying to become a professional boxer – a dream that was eventually crushed by the British Boxing Board of Control.
At the age of 45 now, had fate steered in another direction, Ferdinand could have been deep into a six-year boxing career by this point. He might have even featured on the undercard for Tyson Fury's undisputed heavyweight championship face-off against Oleksandr Usyk last month.
After hanging up his football boots in 2015, Ferdinand went on to discover a newfound passion for boxing when he was invited to appear on a documentary 'Defender to Contender'. The documentary sought to chart his path to turning pro within a period of 18 months under the stern guidance of boxing coach and ex-pugilist Richie Woodhall.

The former defender managed to sculpt himself into an impressive fight-ready physique. And he even had a taste of the boxing life, sparring with leading figures in the heavyweight category such as Frazer Clarke. However, his dreams were cut short when the BBBofC denied his application for a boxing license.
Nevertheless, there is no bitterness towards the boxing authorities from Ferdinand's side. Although the opportunity to pursue a career in the ring was denied, he garnered a unique perspective on what it entails to enter the rough-and-tumble world of boxing.
While promoting his team 'FIVE FC', Ferdinand told the Mirror: "It was a weird time in my life. I needed something to stimulate me and to keep my mind focused for personal reasons.
