Former centre-back Rio Ferdinand does not believe that Manchester United will be capable of mounting a Premier League title charge this season.
United, who will get their campaign up and running at home to Wolves next Monday evening, have ambitions of building on last season's respectable third-placed finish. Manager Erik ten Hag restored standards last term, guiding the club to Champions League qualification and their first trophy in six years in the form of the Carabao Cup.
Following those two successes, United have ambitions of kicking on this season and pushing for further silverware, both in the league and in cup competitions. Just like last season, the Reds will compete on four separate fronts this term.
They have strengthened their squad with three new faces so far this summer, landing goalkeeper Andre Onana from Inter Milan, Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount and Atalanta ace Rasmus Hojlund, who joined the club last weekend. Each member of the aforementioned trio is expected to become a key fixture in Ten Hag's plans.

As a result of those three signings, United will be expected to build on last season's third-placed finish and push Manchester City and Arsenal that little bit closer in pursuit of the title. However, Ferdinand, despite admitting that United are closer to engaging in that battle, does not believe his former side will be capable of doing so this season.
"I'm not surprised [that Ten Hag says United are not title contenders] because I think you've got to look at how far off United were," said Ferdinand.
