Despite reaching an agreement in principle for his signature, no further breakthrough has been made and De Jong headed to the United States with the Catalans for their pre-season tour. His involvement there, though, has raised eyebrows; with De Jong featuring as a substitute at centre-back in his two summer appearances.

United supporters reckon Barcelona are trying to send a message to De Jong over his future, while others suggest Xavi has simply wanted to try the Netherlands man out in a new role. Either way, the experience gained as a stand-in defender may well help De Jong address one slight concern raised by Ferdinand.
When speaking about the 25-year-old on his FIVE podcast earlier this month, the former United man said: "People started hearing about De Jong because he went to Barcelona and they watched him, they have not seen the best of him because he can't play in his best position. His best position is the six, [as the] holding midfielder and his best attribute is receiving the ball and breaking the lines."
