Ricky Gervais surprised even himself by winning a Golden Globe last night.
The comedian and actor took home the Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television award at the 81st Globes for his Armageddon special on Netflix, and later posted a picture (above right) on X (formerly Twitter), with the caption “I f***ing won!”
Gervais defeated favorite Chris Rock, nominated for his Selective Outrage special, as well as Trevor Noah’s Where Was I, Amy Schumer’s Emergency Contact, Sarah Silverman’s Someone You Love and Wanda Sykes’s I’m An Entertainer.
This was the first time the award has been given out.
Five-time Globes host Gervais didn’t attend the bash at the Beverly Hilton. He had earlier posted to say he did not expect to triumph, writing: “Won’t win, but it’s nice to still be up there in the mix, flying the flag.”
Jim Gaffigan accepted the award on his behalf.

Gervais’ special, which came out on Netflix at the end of last year, saw The Office creator riff on the end of humanity, political correctness, family weddings, funerals and A.I.
The taping was criticized for including a skit on terminally ill children, which led to a Change.org petition being launched to have it removed. In the joke, Gervais says he doesn’t burst into hospitals and say, “‘Wake up, baldy'” to cancer sufferers while making videos for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Gervais called out the outrage as “faux offense” and added: “I’m literally saying in the joke that I don’t do that. But people have a reaction. They don’t analyze it. They feel something – that’s what offense is. It’s a feeling. That’s why ‘I’m offended’ is quite meaningless. What do you want me to change?”
The win was Gervais’ fourth at the

Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey, Billy Crystal and Jimmy Kimmel. His opening monologue jokingly covered some of the year’s biggest movies, including a comment about the lengthy run-time of Oppenheimer, a mention of Bradley Cooper’s prosthetic nose in Maestro, and a particularly controversial summary of Barbie. Also, Koy took several opportunities to acknowledge the presence of major stars in the room, including Kevin Costner, Robert De Niro and Taylor Swift. However, he was met with cold glances when he joked: “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? At the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift,” referring to the singer’s recent appearances at American football games.Viewers have been reacting to the monologue on X/Twitter, detailing the generally negative reception of Koy’s jokes. One user suggested a response had been made by a “prominent director” posting: “Wowee. Never seen an audience rebel against an emcee so quickly. One prominent director just couldn’t keep his opinion quiet.
A quick perusal of the reviews indicated tv critics weren’t turned on by what they saw in CBS’s new incarnation of the Golden Globes. Host Jo Koy in particular took some heavy criticism for a generally unfunny and unsuccessful turn in a performance hovering around Ricky Gervais-insult level material but never really getting there. I can’t really speak to how they looked on the tube, but I can say it was fun in the room and the results as they count in the race towards Oscar can only be considered as extremely significant, a collection of winners without a single embarrassment between them. That alone is a triumph considering the history.
2024 Golden Globes, the award show made a bunch of reforms to its ethically wobbly voting body, got a new owner and moved to a different network. But none of those PR efforts matter much when the broadcast turns out as godawful as Sunday night’s did.If only we’d 100% canceled the Globes when we had the chance.Wow, was this shindig agonizing. The evening was unbearably unfunny and had just two or three great speeches over three long hours.
Golden Globes, broadcast on CBS for the first time, the news of the night was that, save for one or two genuine shocks, everything unfolded pretty much as had been widely predicted. First-time host Jo Koy presided over the telecast, which took place, as always, at the Beverly Hilton.
