William Earl administrator This year’s Independent Spirit Awards faced a major broadcast hurdle as a Pro-Palestinian protestor with a speaker and a prerecorded message blared out many of the presenters and winners onstage. The protestor became obvious to at-home audiences when Jim Gaffigan presented “Jury Duty” the award for best ensemble cast in a new scripted series. The rhythm of Gaffigan’s introduction was stilted as microphones picked up the muffled messaging from outside.

This is Day 127 of the WGA strike and Day 54 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Zack Sharf Digital News Director Bill Maher criticized the WGA strike during a discussion with comedian Jim Gaffigan on the “Club Random” podcast. Maher, whose HBO talk show “Real Time” ended its most recent season in April just ahead of the WGA strike, shared his thoughts after Gaffigan noted the strike might kill late night television for good. “They’re asking for a lot of things that are, like, kooky,” Maher said about the WGA.

A few minutes into his new Amazon Original comedy special “Dark Pale,” hitting the streamer July 25, Jim Gaffigan delves into some topical issues — then speculates on how people might respond. Most people associate the veteran comic with his self-deprecating bits about his laziness, living with five children and his many ruminations on Hot Pockets. So, following jokes about COVID and plane crashes, Gaffigan stops for a second and notes, “This is usually the point when people ask, ‘When’s he gonna do the food jokes?’” As he goes further, discussing funeral decorum, he stops and asks the crowd, “Was that too dark? It’s gonna get worse.” On the contrary, Gaffigan is only getting better. Since his television debut in the mid-’90s on “Caroline’s Comedy Hour,” the comedian has constantly adapted to a changing world while maintaining his incisive wit and affability. “Dark Pale” marks the comedian’s 10th comedy special, and while he finds big laughs in some somber topics, he can also mine humor from something as wholesome as a hot air balloon ride with his daughters. His agent, Nick Nuciforo, partner and head of comedy touring at UTA, has repped Gaffigan since 2005, and praises his wide appeal. “His brand of humor is both clean and hip, and I have seen him excel in both alternative rooms and rural settings,” says Nuciforo. “The ability to succeed with any audience is a superpower that opens up unlimited opportunities.”

A few weeks back, trailer editor Andrew Hegele got Film Twitter in a tizzy with his rundown of the great contemporary American filmmakers—and how long it’s been since they’ve made a contemporary movie. Spielberg, Tarantino, Scorsese, Guillermo del Toro, the two Andersons (Wes and Paul Thomas); name after name, cinematic genius after cinematic genius, all turning out period pieces which, at best, say something about the present by saying something about the past.
Jerry Seinfeld and his wife, Jessica, enjoyed some fun in the sun while vacationing on the French Riviera. The 69-year-comedian and the 51-year-old cookbook author were spotted aboard a luxury yacht off the coast of St.Tropez on Wednesday. Any parent’s worst nightmare would be that something bad happens to their child. That’s why kidnapping films and TV series have always struck a chord because the tension and emotions experienced by the parents attempting to find their missing kid are universal.

From the moment Tribeca Festival (no longer just film!) dropped its TV lineup, one title caught our eye: Steven Sodebergh’s “Full Circle.” His latest Max original, another reteaming with “Mosaic” and “No Sudden Move” writer Ed Solomon, looked like just the kind of miniseries sensation the summer needs. We’ll have a full review of the series later, but here’s what we learned at Tribeca — both from the first two episodes and the Q&A that followed.

Director David Lowery’s inner child remains intact and in sprightly condition with “Peter Pan & Wendy,” the filmmaker’s latest soulful live-action remake for Disney. Lowery blew some minds years ago when he made “Pete’s Dragon,” losing very few of the instincts that have made him a viable indie filmmaker with the considerably more challenging films like “A Ghost Story” and “The Green Knight.” His overall fascination with storytelling and the revealing nature of time finds a warm home in the J.M.
