Ralf Rangnick has been told that his treatment of Jesse Lingard underlines a developing pattern which throws up a question mark over what he brings as Manchester United interim manager.
As the clock ticked towards Monday night's 11pm deadline, Lingard saw a potential switch to Newcastle blocked as former loan club West Ham also made a late attempt to sign him.
Following that, the 29-year-old has been granted time away from Carrington to 'clear his head' and will not feature in United's FA Cup tie against Middlesbrough at Old Trafford tonight (8pm).
During his pre-match press conference, Rangnick explained that decision was at Lingard's request - but the forward has since contested that with comments made on social media.
Speaking on radio station talkSPORT, former Manchester City player Trevor Sinclair said: "I don't think Jesse has got an ulterior motive. He wants to play football. He wants to clear things up. What's been said he's not happy with.
"He would have probably wanted to go to Newcastle if possible. He would have gone to West Ham - but he knows that was off the table with the top-four situation."
Sinclair added: "A pattern is developing with Ralf Rangnick where he is coming out and saying something and, after that, the player in question... as you mentioned when Anthony Martial said he wanted to play.
"I can understand the club thinking Jesse may not be in the right head space because he was hoping to get a move before the deadline. It didn't happen. He might have been a bit gutted.

"Maybe he could have been a bad influence. As we know he's a lively character and I can understand the club asking him to do that. But for Rangnick to come
