Prince William made a devastating promise to his mum Princess Diana just a year before she died.
The Prince of Wales, who was just 14 at the time, reportedly vowed to get his adored mum's title back after she was stripped of Her Royal Highness following her divorce from the now King Charles. Diana tied the knot with Charles in 1981 during a fairytale royal wedding at St Paul's Cathedral and she officially became HRH The Princess of Wales.
The royal couple went on to welcome their two children, Prince William born on 21 June 1982 and Prince Harry who arrived two years later on 15 September 1984.
In 1996, Diana and Charles got divorced which came almost a year after she infamously said there were "three of us" in her marriage - in reference to his love for Camilla - during a tell-all BBC Panorama interview.
The divorce resulted in Diana losing her HRH titles, despite claims The Queen was happy for the princess to keep them as she was the mother of the future King. However, despite this Charles reportedly insisted she be stripped of her titles and so from then on, she was known only as Diana, Princess of Wales.
Losing her HRH titles meant that friends and staff would no longer need to bow or curtsey in front of Diana, while she would still have to curtsey to her ex-husband and two sons, along with other members of the Royal Family. This prompted William to make the vow to his mum to restore her HRH title, Diana’s butler and friend Paul Burrell claimed in his book A Royal Duty.
The 14 year old prince at the time reportedly told his mum: "Don’t worry Mummy, I will give it back to you one day when I am King" which Paul claimed left Diana in tears. Sadly, William's heartwarming promise was unable to be fulfilled as his mother died
