A police officer has died after being stabbed to death in a suspected terror attack in Brussels. A second officer was injured during the incident on Thursday evening at the Aarschotstraat in Schaarbeek.
A Belgian official has said the violent attack is suspected to be linked to terrorism, with Belgian police confirming the alleged attacker was shot and "neutralised" after the stabbing.
In a statement, police said: "One of our patrols was attacked by a man armed with a knife. The two police officers then called for reinforcements. An officer from another patrol used his firearm to neutralise the attacker."
"The two injured detectives and the assailant were taken to hospital."
The Associated Press reports a judicial official, who cannot be named due to the ongoing investigation, said there is "a suspicion of a terror attack" but the official did not elaborate. While other Belgian media reports claim the attacker shouted "Allah Akbar," or "God is great."
As reported in the Mirror, the police officer fatally wounded in the incident was stabbed in the neck and later died in hospital, according to Le Soir newspaper. After the incident, a police officer from a separate patrol neutralised the attacker by using his firearm.
Emergency services quickly rushed to the scene as at least three ambulances descended on the street alongside personnel from the Brussels fire brigade. Minister of the Interior, Annelies Verlinden, sent her thoughts to the relatives of those affected on social media.
Posting on Twitter, she said: "What a terrible drama. This event breaks my heart. My thoughts are first and foremost with the loved ones, the members of the police zone and the entire police force.
